Are you Part of a Team that needs to achieve Project Objectives, on Time and within Budget?

"Projects don't fail, the expectations do"! Freelancer Project Manager Tom Klein made this statement recently (Rodney Gedda CIO 3/3/10).   He also said "The number one thing about project management is it is fun and something that, at the end, you see a result."  MCO has a funded Diploma in Project Management BSB51407 available now.  Core units focus on scope, time, costs, quality, human resources, communications, risk and procurement .  It gives the individuals a sound theoretical knowledge base.  Students use a range of specialised technical or managerial competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate their own work and/or the work of the team.  At MCO, our Trainers love working with people and facilitating training.  They have extensive industry experience and can give your employees a learning experience adapted to your industry.

“A Qualification Changes Everything”

This month we feature Ryan Winfield who has recently been promoted to Junior Project Manager at the Springfield branch of LandPartners. Ryan’s work relates to consulting with Developers. He is currently close to finishing his Cert IV in Project Management and has found that the study does apply to what he does at work. Ryan is exposed to managing projects from start to finish.

“In my work, we do the surveying side of things as well as organizing the land titling and legal documents for our clients. We have our own project management structure but I have found that I can apply some of the things I am learning to improve our projects even more.”

After leaving school, Ryan started off as a CAD operator at LandPartners and was interested in working as a Project Manager. He was able to go to the new office at Springfield as a Junior Project Manager and his Cert IV will compliment his work experience.

“Angela Edmonds, my Trainer is excellent, and I meet with her once a month.   I am currently close to finishing my Cert IV, with just one more module to complete, and am interested in extending my study with MCO to the Diploma of Project Management.  I would definitely recommend this study to others. “

Well done Ryan and best wishes for your work and study.

Our Inspirational Student of the Month - John Lonergan (Sales Manager - Altec)

Even a Motorbike Accident didn’t stop him from commencing his last Module

John Lonergan is a Business Consultant and currently manages a team of 21 Consultants, designs sales strategies, writes training manuals, trains, mentors staff and generally advises to the Board for Altec at Seventeen Mile Rocks. John has been juggling the study for a Diploma of Management over the last 18 months. On 9th April this year he suffered serious injury due to a motorcycle accident leaving him with a broken neck, knee, shoulder, hand, ribs, ankle, a punctured lung and everything else bruised or battered. John hit a steel guardrail at 100km/h then flew over the edge of a mountainside 10 metres below. A helicopter was called in as the only means of extraction from the steep bush covered slope. Three hours later John began a protracted hospital stay proving to be a life changing and rather daunting experience. Though considerably disabled, he considered that if he had his laptop to type upon, he may need only one hand.

“I was becoming concerned about the pending delay this accident was going to cause in the completion of my last Module that I was so desperately looking forward to. It occurred to me that this was in fact the perfect opportunity to ‘nail it’, to study while my mobile phone was not ringing (no coverage) and get as much of the remaining assessment done. The nurses would come in at midnight only to find me typing away and talking to myself. They would take more blood and speculate as to the severity of my head injury.”

John had done study many years before however always regretted not finishing his Diploma in Engineering Surveying, when the opportunity presented itself. He was not about to allow history to repeat itself.

“A simple qualification changes your life in many ways, the way you feel about yourself and the way others feel about you (especially those who pay you). Your attitude, your self confidence and most importantly your appeal to other professionals accelerates surprisingly. Doors open more frequently and by far more easily.”

John has these words of inspiration and advice for others,

“It is certainly not easy to combine study with the responsibilities of your work. At times the challenge seemed ridiculous and futile - ‘IT AINT’!   It is about time management. Get good at it. Opportunity knocks all the time. Many times we simply don’t hear it.”

Thank you John for sharing your story, we wish you a speedy recovery and congratulations on the pending completion of your Diploma in Management.
