Hi all
"A lovely thing about Christmas is that it's compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together". Garrison Keillor
Diploma OH&S Most popular in 2011
Grahame Lowe (pictured standing) can attest to the popularity of Diploma of OH&S having recently trained a mixed group of 17, at MCO.
The group included representatives from Fielders Australia, Chep, Fulton Hogan, Mere Mortals and East Core Drilling (to name a few) and the training was conducted in an intensive 5 days.. Grahame split the group into two as some students already had a Cert IV in OH&S and many had extensive experience in workplace health and safety.
Juanita Boyce, a Director of Mere Mortals who are Systems Interpreters, working with mining, construction and manufacturing industries said that they have to be aware of OH&S responsibliities.
"As a Director, ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law" Juanita said.
"We have to make sure we are compliant", according to Juanita.. She said that being compliant and able to demonstrate an awareness of OH&S requirements is becoming more and more a requirement from insurance companies.
During her participation in the course Juanita commented favourably on the structure of the program and the ability of the trainer to reduce duplication.
"I didn't want to be handing work in over the next two week period as when I'm at home I'm also catching up on work emails and don't have much time. At the end of every session I had done everything that is required and then it was on to the next module."
Neil Olsson, Capital Projects Manager with Fulton Hogan took advantage of the 5 day Diploma program, having known Grahame and Mel for a number of years. He first introduced MCO to Fulton Hogan and enjoyed Grahame's regular visits for 20 minutes training at regular management meetings.
"Grahame was an integral part of motivation, goal setting and assisting people to use their life skills. He is invaluable - he can fit an hour into 20 minutes by making it short and sharp. "
Neil said that a large part of the work in the Diploma he had done already and was using RPL.
"It has helped me to acknowledge industry experience. We are working collaboratively in groups. It is a true RPL where you have a peer group discussing relevant issues."
(It is a MCO requirement that participants must attend class work and complete written short answers and must provide extensive experience of project work, to be eligible for RPL.).
"Grahame has supported the group to distinguish between those who are new to OH&S and those who are OH&S practitioners, which assisted students to work at their own pace", Neil said

Rosina conducts another successful Certificate IV Training & Assessment at MCO
Rosina's training is always action packed! Her students at the recent Certificate IV in Training & Assessment at MCO did presentations as varied as how to trim a Bonsai, to how to remove dirty grout from tiles, to how to make Fried Rice and even how to make Sushi.
"I encourage students to explore and train others in the things in their life they are good at, not necesssarily tasks at their workplace", Rosina said.
Participants in the 5 day course included representatives from Merial Australia, Hyteco, East Core Drilling, Mere Mortals, Aspley Bike Hub, to name but a few. Participants enjoyed the 5 day intensive program.
Damien Hitchcock was a former Safety Advisor at Box & Co Constructions and self funded his Certificate IV in TAE. He is interested in the mining industry and completed his Cert IV for safety training and to sign off core skills in the mining industry. It is minimum rquirement to have a TAE.
"Rosina provided very structured training. She is very direct and very positive. It was a "flowing" classroom. I enjoyed other people's presentations and they were very entertaining as well. I had the benefit of having done a partial TAA before" Damien said.
"MCO's style of completing the Assessments in class is a lot better than what I had done before. I found I forgot a lot previously"
"I am hoping for a job opening shortly and will be doing another self funded OH&S course for my career advantage."
CONGRATULATIONS to all of you for your tremendous achievement.

Mums returning to work - loyal and excellent staff
You have only to read the newspaper to see that the current skills shortage is giving a reason for employers to utilise as many attraction and retention strategies as they can to keep good staff.
Many would agree that mothers are some of the best employees because of their multi-tasking and time management skills.
MCO is a flexible workplace and therefore attracts and retains busy Mums (editor of this Newsletter included!). Organisations are acknowledging that many employees have a greater need for flexibility to enable them to balance life's challenges.
They also need training and MCO can help.
"Our generation has spent more time and effort than any other on their education and as they are having children later, they are leaving the workforce on a high. They should be able to return to the workforce and use their sklils (and develop new ones) after having children too."http://www.motherinc.com.au/magazine/everything-for-mum/life-balance/workingmums/369-support-for-working-mums-is-there-enough

New Year Resolutions
A word from our Director, Mel Symon
A New Year is a time to take stock of where you want to be in life, make resolutions and start making these happen. Just look at the surge in gym memberships at the start of every year - in my opinion, losing weight and improving yourself through training are the number one New Year's Resolutions.
In the training industry, we can change your life! We are often the ones who can help you get started with a Certificate program, perhaps progressing to a Diploma and even, as we've shown in past issues, possibly being accepted into a Bachelor or Masters Program
With the lure of the resources boom and the many job opportunities for skilled employees, employers are looking for ways to encourage, reward and engage staff to improve staff retention. There are many opportunities for you to shape and strengthen your career. So, this New Year, don't just resolve to lose weight and train your body - train your mind too - give us a call, we can help!
