Hi all

Say Yes to Training this May

Welcome

Welcome to Jo Smith, our new Office/Compliance Coordinator.  Jo has a background in Training having worked in the areas of Business, IT, Retail and Hairdressing and has hit the ground running since arriving last month.

At MCO, we value your business and seek to keep you up to date with what we have on offer:  our range of industry focussed training courses, flexible training options and the best service.  Our Marketing Officer, Cecilia McDonald enjoys talking to students while they're at work about their progress with their training and their ongoing relationship with their trainer, discussing what their businesses have achieved from the training and hearing the students' aspirations for further studies.  We love to hear stories from real people juggling busy jobs with equally busy home lives, making time for their study while taking on extra challenges at work.

This month, one student demonstrates an alternative pathway to a Masters in HR, we have a feature on our popular Occupational Health & Safety Courses, we have a list of useful websites for Finance students and we discuss User Choice Funding.  AT MCO, we believe that learning new skills and being recognised for the skills you have are important for the whole of your working life.  Why not encourage staff to extend themselves into new areas by offering training in other areas and utilising their skills by creating new positions.

THIS MAY, say Yes to Training with MCO

Look Where your Training may lead you!

Megan Field is Human Resources & Training Officer from Transcity, the consortium in charge of Legacy Way, a 4.6km underground toll road that will link the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass (ICB) at Kelvin Grove. Megan started her study with a Diploma in Human Resources, following it up with an Advanced Diploma in Human Resources at MCO. She also added another valuable qualification by doing a Cert IV in Training & Assessment.

Megan demonstrates an alternative path to getting a Masters, as instead of University, she used her Advanced Diploma to gain entry into a Masters in HR through the Australian Institute of Business Administration in Adelaide (AIBA). In her current job, Megan does end to end recruitment, training, employment contracts and programs for staff development.  How does Megan manage a demanding job alongside regular study? She sets 3 hours a week night aside or alternatively allows a whole weekend

Thank you Megan, your hard work is an inspiration to others

Focus on Occupational Health & Safety

"Queensland businesses still need Workplace Health and Safety Officers".  There has been recent media attention regarding the national Model Occupational Health and Safety Act which doesn't come into effect until 2012 and will bring all the states into uniformity. The existing legislation still stands.

Contact MCO NOW for information regarding Cert IV in Occupational Health & Safety and Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety.  Organisations employing over 30 staff must have a Workplace Health & Safety Officer (www.deir.qld.gov.au/workplace/training/whso).  A Workplace Health and Safety Officer is responsible for:

  • Advising the employer or principal contractor on health and safety issues
  • ensuring all work injuries, work caused illnesses or dangerous events at the workplace are investigated
  • conducting appropriate health and safety education programs
  • other functions which are stated in Section 96 of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995
  • conducting assessments at the workplace

Remember EVERYONE is responsible for workplace health and safety.

"Master Builders" in their April/May 2011 edition refer to national harmonisation of OH&S laws in their article "Avalanche of reform is on its way".  The article states that in the construction industry, the changes will mean site management will be more complex.  It refers to the subcontracting arrangements that the construction industry has as being unique.  The article states that Workplace Health & Safety officers are regarded as the "safety experts on the job"  ... "Their capacity to identify and rectify dangerous situations, as well as their role in incident prevention and ensuring the safety of workers and others at the coalface, cannot be understated." Although under the new legislation, Workplace Health & Safety officers will become redundant, the Model Act infers that a similarly qualified person would assist in the discharge of legal duties.  A Cert IV in OH&S has been flagged as the minimum benchmark qualification for those in a safety management role at any level.

OH&S Team secure Double Diploma - Our Student of the Month

This month, we congratulate and acknowledge Ed Pollock, Workplace Health & Safety Officer, Enabling Services, at Brisbane City Council who has recently received his Double Diploma in Management and Workplace Health & Safety after completing the work in a very busy 12 months!

"As a WH&S Officer for Council, I am involved in maintaining the Health & Safety of Council employees on a daily basis. From conducting Incident Investigations to ensuring staff training requirements are current & within legislated time frames, my job is interesting & vital to ensure our workers return safely to their families each day."

Ed has impressed us with his hard work and has also encouraged two other members of his team to follow suit and gain their Diplomas. How did he manage work and study?

“I stuck to a routine & didn't let the work pile up creating a mountain out of a mole hill. I made sure I did 2 hours here and there regularly to keep a step ahead. Grahame Lowe is a great instructor, engaging, knowledgeable & always very helpful. My team members are eagerly awaiting kicking off their Safety component with him in the near future”.

Thanks Ed from the MCO team for being an inspiration to others.

Effective OH&S Training through Teleconferencing

Rob Adkins from ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd in Townsville has almost completed his Diploma in OH&S with our Trainer Neville Kussrow. The distance isn’t a problem as the trainer sends powerpoint presentations through to him and he conducts training sessions over the phone. Rob says that Neville is an effective trainer and his experience translates well to construction.

“Neville and I are on the same wavelength. Although the training uses a variety of scenarios, almost all of the course can be applied to my work - what we are studying is what we do at work every day.”

The accessibility of funding for this Course has also made it very attractive to the staff to complete the training.

A student's story - HR job created for me

There has been much discussion in the media about skills shortages and the need to upskill our current staff and fill gaps by offering training and support.  Recent Weekend Australian ("Weekend Professional p1) Article on May 7-8 discusses the Great Place to Work Institute Australia.  The Institute says that "A great place to work isn't only a welcoming and enjoyable workplace, but a profitable and stable one too.  Managing Director, Zrinka Lovrencic, says "In our experience success is achieved by harvesting talent within your organisation ...."

Andrea from SRJ Accountants and Business Advisors at Strathpine, a current MCO student studying for her Diploma in Management is an example of an employee who was encouraged by her employer to study in HR even before a position was created.  She was initially working in the Finance team, doing Debtors Collection, and progressed her way through to looking after payroll and creditors.  Andrea was then approached by the Director to provide HR admin support and was mentored in the role by the Director himself.  She was invited to complete the funded Diploma in HR through MCO which increased her knowledge and skills and prepared her for career progression within the organisation.  She continues to work as a HR Administrator and takes on higher tasks continuously.  Andrea is in her final module of the Diploma of Management and we look forward to issuing her qualification.  Well done Andrea!

Its never been a better time to take advantage of the generous government incentives for businesses and partner with MCO for all your training needs.  Contact Director Mel Symon on toll free 1300 552 435 or 07 3205 1130 to discuss your training needs.

Thank you to MCO and Rosina Aston

Brad Raphael from Sulzer, Dowding & Mills at Brendale recently completed his Cert IV in Business Sales through MCO.  He wanted to make mention of his gratitude to Rosina Aston.

"Rosina was very influential in motivating me to produce work that I didn't think I had in me.  I have always been a blue collar worker and over the last few years I have taken on the sales role at our company because of my technical knowledge and ability to talk to people.  My biggest downfall was not being able to put things into words on paper, setting out of reports and making presentations.  During my training I have had several good comments from my colleagues regarding the improvements I have made.  Not only am I putting out excellent reports and proposals now, I'm also much more confident.  Thanks MCO and Rosina."

Testimonial

Steven Burrows from MWH Global is currently studying his Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety but has completed his Diploma in Management.  He believed that there was something in each module, a little nugget, that you could implement in your workplace.

"The study has allowed me to develop the tools to plan and have the skills to critique management practices.  The contact time and support from my trainer, Rosina Aston was great.  She was very enthusiastic about what she was teaching, always willing to help, always available with very speedy response times ... I managed to balance the study with my workload.  I had to leave a weekend free each month and just sit down and do it!"
