HOW DO STUDENTS MANAGE WORK, HOME AND STUDY?

In our July Newsletter, we congratulated MCO’s Accounts Manager, Maree McDermott, for continuing to work hard towards her Cert IV in Financial Services while balancing, sometimes precariously, a hectic schedule at work and home. Balancing work and study is always hard but necessary if students are to complete their course and keep all the balls in the air.

Managed Corporate Outcomes has a team of great trainers with a wealth of experience to not only adapt your training to make it applicable to your workplace but also to assist you with time management and identifying your priorities. This can help you with the hurly burly of juggling children, work, study and managing a home.

Managing stress in the workplace is always a hot topic. In a recent article in the Courier Mail, the founder of the Queensland based Work Life Balance Foundation, Dr Paul Lanthois said he believes in encouraging businesses to improve the well-being and life balance of today’s workers. “Workers need to develop sustainability skills of juggling the demands of work and home life while maintaining excellent health.” Jackie Sinnerton’s article in the Sunday Mail recently, also referred to “work-life balance as the key to success” and quoted the findings of the latest Galaxy Poll where although most dads found fatherhood fulfilling, half sought greater work flexibility to spend more time with their families. Sinnerton said “many working men are still reluctant to speak with their employer about more flexible working conditions for fear their career will suffer.”

And for the ladies - In the Courier Mail recently, Fran Metcalf’s article entitled “Working Towards Equality” quoted Maureen Frank, founder of gender diversity firm Emberin, who advised women to be proactive about their careers “Get on the front foot – this is your career and your life.” “Tell your manager how much your career means to you …”

Here are some tips from MCO to help you with your work life balance:

• Your course modules are designed to create a momentum. Each module naturally leads into the next and your trainer can assist you to blend these together.
• Don’t delay your modules as the momentum is then broken and it is harder to get back on track.
• Some employees are able to find a “niche” time that suits them, for example, it might be from 5-8 a.m. a few mornings a week or you may be able to negotiate with your supervisor a day off a month, with the goal of completing a module on this day.
• Never double your workload by handwriting tasks first. It is more efficient to type as you think.
• Prepare yourself for the task ahead. Eat well and rehydrate as the less distracted you are, the more you will achieve.
• Put time limits against each box of your “to do” list.
• Ask yourself “what one thing can I do today that will make my life better tomorrow?”

Bruce Sullivan, author of “1 Life Do it Now” says that we need to be prepared to “do it poorly” at first until we “do it well.” He advises to get started, do it poorly for a while and remember that a 1% chance of success by trying is better than a 100% chance of failure by not trying at all.

Call Cecilia at MCO on 3205 2270 or email info@mcosite.com to make it happen and to take full advantage of the current government funded courses.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

This month, we feature Ali Rickuss, Front Office Manager from Tangalooma Resort as our student of the month.

Currently, Ali is completing a Diploma of Management through MCO with her studies commencing in April 2010. She commenced employment at Tangalooma Island Resort in December 2004 as a Receptionist and in 2006 was offered a promotion to become a Supervisor, in 2007 was promoted to Assistant Front Office Manager and in 2009 was promoted to Front Office Manager. Prior to commencing her Diploma, the management skills she had came from observing, learning and listening to her previous managers. Before joining Tangalooma she had worked as a front desk agent at the Great Eastern Hotel in London for three years and previously worked in retail.

In late 2009 Ali, with the support of her director and the operations manager at Tangalooma was enrolled in her Diploma of Management and since then has not looked back. Ali says “I am pacing myself, completing one module each month which I can combine with daily exercise”. She feels that its not hard to stay motivated for work, study and exercise – “I live and work in one of the most beautiful locations in Australia, fresh air, no traffic congestion, pristine beaches, dolphins, dugongs and the most amazing sunsets.” She encourages everyone to have a look at the website www.tangalooma.com.. “After checking out the website you will no doubt want to see it for yourself so come on over and take a trip to Tangalooma for the day or for a holiday, it’s only an hour off the coast of Brisbane. For bookings please contact our Reservations team on (07) 3637 2000.”

Ali says “I personally have found the course to be incredibly informative and very beneficial for not only myself and my development, but for my work team and their development too. I feel that I am achieving so much more each day, each week and each month and I’m only at the halfway point through my Diploma. I would certainly recommend the Diploma of Management course to anyone who wants to work smarter, plan better and continue to build their career in a management role.”

Ali has nothing but praise for her trainer Rosina Aston, who she feels has been incredibly supportive. “She has provided me with some great advice, study tips, encouragement and assistance whenever requested”, Ali says. “At the completion of my Diploma and with the support of my director and operations manager I would like to continue my studies and would choose MCO as my preferred training organisation. I have found the enrolment process to be uncomplicated, course selections plentiful, course material more than sufficient, training and guidance totally professional and continual follow up reassuring. The impression I receive from MCO is that they care about their students and their progress.”

My only wish is that I had completed this course earlier in my career, because had I been applying the skills that I have now developed, I could have achieved even more.

“It takes courage to push yourself to places that you have never been before. To test your limits … to break through barriers. And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.

TESTIMONIAL

Plantation Homes is a national company with branches in Queensland, Melbourne, South Australia and New South Wales and it is a pleasure to speak about our training relationship with Managed Corporate Outcomes Pty Ltd.

Plantation Homes has had a strong presence in Queensland for fourteen years, has won numerous awards and currently employs 115 staff. The head office is in Springwood. Managed Corporate Outcomes Pty Ltd has trained, and is currently training, a range of employees from administration and reception staff through to presenters, finance personnel and members of the sales team.

All of the staff involved in training are doing so for their own personal growth and development, and their study is often a stepping stone to another aspect of their role. The subjects are always made relevant to the work at hand and our staff are able to “think outside the square” and put the learning into practice by applying this information. At Plantation Homes, our service to our customers is upheld and enhanced when the staff are educated, motivated and “feel good about themselves.”

Managed Corporate Outcomes Pty Ltd has talented and knowledgeable trainers. For example, Rosina Aston is able to share with students the knowledge that she has learned in her lifetime from many different industries and brings this to all of the training sessions. Rosina is always open and ready to help and give support, which keeps students motivated and encouraged.

We look forward to a continuing excellent training relationship with Managed Corporate Outcomes Pty Ltd.

Yours faithfully
