MCO Student of the Month

Name: Robert Nott
Title: Senior Technical Officer
Employer: GroundProbe®

Renowned internationally for its Slope Stability Radar (SSRTM) GroundProbe provides precise information for risk management, making mining and infrastructure projects safer and more profitable.

Course: Certificate IV Project Management with upgrade to Diploma of Project Management

Since commencing his studies in March after many years of working in the field with Ground Probe, Rob has successfully completed one module a month and is on course for final completion by the end of this calendar year.

Rob’s role predominately involves scheduling maintenance of Ground Probe’s SSR fleet for Australasia and although he has been doing this job for years he has found the content and procedures in the course to be time saving.

Robs Top Tips:
• Break the assessment down into individual questions which can be completed in your lunch hour.
Rob recommends stepping away from your desk to a quiet place. By doing this he is able to get the majority of his assessment completed during the week keeping his weekends free for his family. He also recommends taking advantage of rainy Sundays
• Draw on your personal experiences both work and home as you will be surprised how often it will relate to your studies. This really makes everything easier to understand and relevant to your role/life.
• Rob spends his sessions with his trainer Grahame to gain as much of an understanding as he can of the questions. He uses his trainer to make connections between the content and his role. He has found by actually reading the entire question a couple of times and thinking about it he generally gains a greater understanding of what is required.
• Rob writes many notes, references to pages in the text and work or life experience to help him understand the question better during training sessions. Rob says: “you will be surprised how much your personal experience can be drawn on and contextualized, especially for Project Management.”
• Read the text book chapter a couple of times throughout the week
Rob regularly reads chapters in the textbook at night to keep the content fresh
• The internet is a great source of information
Rob finds that if he is stuck on a question by having a quick Google he can often easily gain a better understanding of the question and terminology.

Managed Corporate Outcomes would like to thank Rob for his time in putting together this article and wish him great success in completing his studies.
